Everyone has a life and a destiny to fulfil, after which there is a point of departure. Solomon, the wisest and the wealthiest man in his days, said death happens to everybody (the rich, poor, righteous, and the wicked). No matter your rank, possessions, or achievements in this world, everything is temporary because death is inevitable!

Luke 12:13–21 reveals the story of the rich fool whose business blossomed. He suddenly became arrogant, refusing to return the glory to God, and he was erased from the living. People in this generation are also illegally acquiring wealth, forgetting that it all ends here on earth. There was a time when one of such powerful fellows died, and not even a dime was buried with him!

Beloved, what are you struggling to get? Money, houses, certificates, or fame? These are good, but life is like a show that soon fades away. No value must be placed on perishable materials over your soul because, as seen in today’s Bible reading, once a person dies, their fate is sealed. While alive, the best thing to do is to surrender your life to Christ. Jesus is the surest escape route from death. On earth and in eternity, there is an assured hope in Him. Therefore, live a life of holiness with the help of the Holy Spirit, have faith, love others, and spread the gospel (Psalm 96:3).

FAMINE OF THE WORD

Matthew 4:1–4 – “Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”’ (NIV)

Read: Ephesians 6:16–17

Where there is a famine of God’s Word, destruction is imminent because the Word of God is life and food for the soul. In today’s Bible reading, when Satan confronted Jesus, the response he got revealed that the scriptures are not ordinary letters but daily bread for believers. Without the Word, people become weak and vulnerable to the kingdom of darkness.

The famine of God’s Word also leads to ignorance. In this complex world, ignorance prevents people from gaining understanding and living the truth. Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” The absence of God’s knowledge gives room for confusion and a lack of standards. For example, the increasing abominations in countries today are a result of institutions neglecting divine instructions.

However, the good news is that there is a solution, which is found in the words of Jesus: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Every person, family, Church, and nation must return to intentionally living by what God says. God’s Word is genuine and accessible. People who use the Word as a guiding light will enjoy spiritual and physical prosperity. I encourage you to study the Bible daily, pray fervently, and pay close attention to the Holy Spirit. You will never lack the Word.

1. Lord Jesus, thank You for preserving my life, saving my soul, and providing for all my needs, in Jesus’ name (Jeremiah 30:19).

2. Father, please search me through to blot out my sins and grant me access to Your throne of grace, in Jesus’ name (Psalm 139:23-24).

3. I cover and soak my household, myself, and my belongings in the blood of Jesus Christ (Revelation 12:11).

Beloved, give thanks to God for instant answers to prayers, even as you tell Him about your heart desires for the week. God has granted your requests according to His will and purpose through Christ (Romans 8:28).

GOD DID IT

I give special thanks to God for how far He has been sustaining my family. During the December retreat that was tagged Come Up Higher, my sister’s admission to University was one of my top requests before God. When the first admissions list was released, her name was not shortlisted. I continued praying and trusting God for it, and finally Abba showed up. God also used my aunt to clear her fees for the session when we were thinking about how to raise all the money needed. I want to say thank you to Abba for doing that, which seems impossible. May God bless the Food of Champions ministry and all His servants who have availed themselves for the master’s use.

I was chatting with a brother on Monday, and by divine inspiration, I said, “God has heard you”, and by Tuesday, he sent this in:

“Indeed, it is done! I had nothing yesterday morning, but I went to work. My colleagues left for a break at noon, leaving me behind. Moments later, a lady brought her vehicle, which I repaired late into the night. Usually, I get my salary monthly, but this time the woman at her will said, “I have bought you some food”, and surprisingly, she also gave me 4,000 Kwacha for disturbing me at lunch hour.” Glory to God!

A WORK IN PROGRESS

A WORK IN PROGRESS

Genesis 41:41 – Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the entire land of Egypt.” (NLT)

Read: Genesis 41:37-45

The term “work in progress” refers to an ongoing effort or unfinished goods in the manufacturing process. The process involves a series of actions taken to produce the product. The story of Joseph in today’s Bible reading presents an excellent example of a work in progress. The boy went through the following processes to become what God had planned for him:

1. He had dreams and visions of the journey and glory to come (Genesis 37:5–9).

2. His enslavement prepared him for service to the people (Genesis 37:12–36).

3. The stage of his seduction by Mrs Portiphar served as a test, preparing him for self-discipline (Genesis 39).

4. Joseph’s gift and interpretation of dreams gave him the platform to the top and the fulfilment of his purpose (Genesis 50:15–20).

5. His successful management of the food crisis in Egypt brought about an agricultural policy that yielded human and economic prosperity (Genesis 41:46–57).

Beloved, you can tell how durable a product is by its makeup process. Regardless of God’s promises or current events in your life, you are a work in progress. Hold on! Just as a child born today cannot get into a university tomorrow, I encourage you to allow God to complete His work in you, like He did for Joseph. In the meantime, focus on the process, pass the test, and learn from it. Your product will have a glorious impact on generations.

THE FAITHFUL STEWARDS

Colossians 4:17B – “Be sure to do the work the Lord gave you.” (ERV)

Read: Colossians 4:1-18

Colossians 4 reveals Paul’s life and his perseverance in ministry. The apostle was in prison several times, yet encouraged the people through letters and coveted their prayers. He said in Colossians 4:3, “Pray that we can continue to tell people the secret truth that God has made known about Christ.” What an incredible man! His life demonstrates that challenges or persecution should never be a limiting factor in proclaiming Jesus. Instead, every experience should motivate Christians to do more and even mobilise others to intercede for the prosperity of the gospel.

Paul did a significant thing by sending men to places he could not reach during imprisonment. He did this because he had mentored the people who became passionate, like him. Tychicus and Onesimus were part of the faithful stewards who made the ministry easy for the apostle. Paul also referred to Epaphras, an intercessor who constantly prayed for the people’s spiritual maturity. Another was Nympha, who opened her doors to the Church for regular worship.

Beloved, the testimony of Paul and the stewards in today’s Bible reading is an encouragement at these times. Leaders need to fully commit to their responsibilities and serve as exemplary mentors, capable of inspiring their mentees to continue their work amidst challenging circumstances. On the other hand, every child of God should aspire to know their calling and get active. I pray that the Lord will grant you an understanding of His will and provide for those in need to press on in ministry.

ARE YOU FIT?

Luke 9:62 – Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” (NIV)

Read: Luke 9:57-62; 1 Peter 2:9

Following yesterday’s devotional on the requirements of discipleship, another man said to Jesus, “I will follow you, but first let me go and say goodbye to my family.” Today’s Bible reading reveals Christ’s response. As it is with Jesus to use parables for illustration, putting one’s hands on the plough means being ready for action. Agriculture was the primary source of livelihood; therefore, the people knew that for a plougher to succeed in planting and harvesting crops, it involved focus and looking forward, not backwards.

In the other part of the main text, why would the plougher become unfit for God’s kingdom? John 15:16 enjoins every child of God to bear much fruit. When the farmer loses focus, he won’t plough the ground properly, leading to an insufficient harvest. Besides, the family that the man wanted to say goodbye to refers to the world in this context, but God has called us out of the world. Anyone saved by Christ must never return to the past because they will not bear abundant fruit (Matthew 3:10).

Beloved, are you still looking back at the old lifestyles or regretting answering God’s call? If yes! Urgently reassess your priorities because you might become unfit for the kingdom. It is impossible to be subject to the world and serve God. The world may give pleasures, but they are temporary. Don’t exchange your destiny or spiritual calling with something momentary. Instead, be entirely convinced to do Christ’s will, forget the things behind, and put your hands on the plough to reach forward to those things ahead!

THE DEAD MUST BURY THEIR DEAD

Luke 9:60
Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” (NIV)

Read: Luke 9:57-62

Often, people are quick to classify themselves as disciples of Jesus. However, to be a true disciple, one must fulfil essential requirements. In today’s Bible text, Jesus told a man willing to be his disciple to follow him. But the gentleman replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father”. This man was genuine in giving priority to his father’s burial, maybe to claim inheritance or to stay with the family for a year to rebury the bones (Jewish practice). However, Christ’s response reveals that the man’s request meant he placed tradition and his desires above God’s work.

On the other hand, who are “the dead”, whom Jesus referred to as the ones to bury their dead? Take note that the Jews regularly used the word “dead” to express that something had no power. For example, being dead to the law or sin means that they both have no control over the person (Romans 6:11; 7:4). In this case, the people of the world are spiritually dead because they neither hear God’s voice nor follow Him. As such, since they place no priority on God and care about norms, they would be more focused on burying their deceased relatives.

In essence, Jesus was telling the man to allow those less interested in His work to care for the dead. But the willing disciple’s focus must be on God and the prosperity of the gospel. Beloved, while the Scripture is clear about honouring the parents, God’s kingdom comes first. To be Christ’s disciple, tradition is secondary, while personal preference must conform to the will of God.

Matthew 14:30 – But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. (NLT)

Read: Matthew 14:29-31

Today’s Bible reading reveals how Peter began to sink into the sea after the wind became turbulent. The man never pretended to be okay but screamed out for help. Immediately, Jesus stretched out his hand and rescued him. Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Regardless of the nature of your situation, don’t keep quiet, but pray to God. He will arrive and deliver you from your troubles.

Another point to note from Peter’s story is that to attract God’s attention, you must have no source of alternative help. Peter had no other option for safety besides Christ, and he got his deliverance. If you are sinking in the ocean of sorrow, confusion, loneliness, stagnation, and marital crisis, fixing your gaze on Jesus and your desperation in prayer can be the passport to your liberation. You can also speak with trusted people who can assist and guide you. A sealed mouth is a sealed destiny.

Beloved, I encourage you to cry out to God with all your heart tonight, and He will hear you.

10. This week and beyond, I shall not lose my salvation, family, neighbours, sanity, and valuables, in Jesus’ name. (Isaiah 26:3-4).

Thank God and give Him glory for an immediate answer to prayers. Perhaps you still have a heart desire; tell it to Him—He’ll hearken unto you (Jeremiah 33:3).
